The San Juan City Commission approved a proclamation, in collaboration with the City of Pharr, City of Alamo, PSJA ISD, and Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, recognizing October 23-31, 2018, as Red Ribbon Week. The nationally designated week calls on all Americans to show their support for a drug-free state by wearing a red ribbon and participating in drug-free activities during that week. The entities made the unified commitment as a catalyst to mobilize their communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. “Red Ribbon Week has made a big impact in our communities,” said Mayor Mario Garza. “This program is important to educating our students and our community about the dangers of drugs, we look forward to continuing to partner with our local cities and school districts as we work together to educate our youth about the dangers they pose,” he added.
Commission Approves Resolution to Strengthen the Texas Trauma Network
Mayor Garza and Commissioners approved a resolution in support of strengthening the Texas Trauma Network. The resolution, which was presented by Mario Lizcano, Administrator of Corporate Affairs for DHR Health, asks for the support of the City of San Juan during the upcoming legislative session to make funding available to strengthen the Texas Trauma Network and ensuring the residents of the Rio Grande Valley have timely access to the highest level of care when facing a severe traumatic incident. Currently, the nearest Level I Comprehensive Trauma Facility to Region V, which encompasses the Rio Grande Valley counties, is located over 240 miles away.
City Commission Adopts Budget for Fiscal Year 2018-2019
The City Commission and Mayor adopted the fiscal year Budget for the City of San Juan at $11,537,967. This money will be appropriated from the city’s general fund and cover operating expenses, upgrades to city equipment, parks, and other identified needs.
