Assistant City Manager Ed Wylie and Finance Director Karla Moya announced that the sales tax activity for the city of Pharr continues to show a positive upward trend, demonstrating a steady increase in sales activity. The city’s sales tax activity as of the month of February 2018 shows sales in the amount of $448,744, an increase of 6.37% compared to the same period last year. Pharr ranked No. 2 this month compared to 9 other cities in the Valley in sales collections compared to last period.
Pharr Presents Checks to Local Non-Profits
During last month’s State of the City Address, Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. announced that the City of Pharr would be awarding three $5,000 checks to local community non-profits as a result of excess money raised, in the form of donations, for the city’s address—No Taxpayer money was used for the event. Mayor Hernandez and Commissioners presented the check at the city meeting to: The Pharr Community Theater, Outcry in the Barrio, and First RGV. “Each of these organizations has made an enormous contribution to our community,” stated Mayor Hernandez. “From working to preserve our cultural heritage through the arts, to working with the youth in our community to promote STEM education and careers, to helping the vulnerable in our community suffering from addiction, abuse, and mental health, all three of these organizations are making a difference within our city and we are proud to support their work.”
Pharr Police Department Officer JC Aguirre Retires
Officer JC Aguirre was recognized upon his retirement after 33 years of service with the Pharr Police Department. Mayor Hernandez and Commissioners presented him with a commemorative police officer statue and each member of the commission praised his hard work, dedication, and commitment to the community. “I enjoyed every moment of this job, but most importantly, I believe that this position was all about the relationships I built with the community,” stated Officer Aguirre. It is a beautiful thing to have witnessed and I am blessed for this great opportunity to serve my community,” he continued.
Pharr Pledges Support for IT’S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge
Mayor Hernandez and Pharr City Commissioners signed a pledge approving Pharr’s participation in the 2018 IT’S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge sponsored by HEB. The challenge is a statewide competition that pits Texas communities against one another to see which can demonstrate the greatest commitment to healthy living by having participants log their progress online and through an app. The Challenge, which runs from January 8 through March 4, has pledged support from 34 mayors from around the state and so far, the City of Pharr ranks #5 in the Mid-Size Statewide Scoreboard for cities with a population of 40,001-100,000.
