The City of Weslaco held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 23 for a new 45-acre park off of FM 88 and Mile 11 Road. This project will feature a one-mile park trail and additional nature trails, a fitness equipment station, tennis courts, basketball courts, and sand volleyball courts, youth soccer fields, a splash pad, and an amphitheater.

Future phases may include softball/youth baseball fields, lighted athletic fields, playgrounds, and additional picnic units.  The City of Weslaco has received assistance from several different entities that are helping with the funding and building. Grants for the new park include $500K grant through the Land & Water Conservation Fund U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service administered by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department; $500K from the Knapp Community Care Foundation and $500K from the Weslaco Economic Development Corporation.

Hidalgo County Precinct One is providing assistance by building a one-mile 12-foot wide asphalt trail and playground system and the City of Weslaco has committed $300,000 and in-house construction of the park road and parking lot.  Total commitment for phase one of the project is $1.8 million and the projected completion date is July 2020.
