The Board of Commissioners of the City of San Juan met for a regular meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, and considered an agenda that included the following highlights:

City Commission Canvasses Voting Results and Swears In Commissioner Lenny Sanchez

During the meeting the City Commission officially canvassed the returns for the May 4, 2019, City Election for Commissioner Place 4 and Commissioner Place 5. After reviewing the results, it was announced that there will be a run-off election for San Juan Commissioner, Place 5. Re-elected Commissioner for Place 4 Leonardo “Lenny” Sanchez was sworn into office by Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Precinct 2, Place 2 Judge Jaime “Jerry” Muñoz. 

City Commissioners Approve Resolution Issuing Order and Notice of Runoff Election

The San Juan City Commission approved the Runoff Election dates and times. Early voting will take place from 7 am to 7 pm on Tuesday, May 28, 8 am to 5 pm from Wednesday, May 29 through Tuesday June 4, and 7 am to 7 pm on June 4. Election Day is Saturday, June 8, 2019, from 7 am to 7 pm. The polling place for Early Voting will be at Fire Station No. 2, 2301 North Raul Longoria, San Juan, Texas 78589. On Election Day, two polling places will be available: Fire Station No. 2, 2301 North Raul Longoria, San Juan, Texas 78589 and Carman Elementary, 100 West Ridge Road, San Juan, Texas 78589.

San Juan Proclaims May 2019 as Older Americans Month

The San Juan City Commission presented members and staff from Amigos Del Valle with a proclamation declaring the month of May 2019 as “Older Americans Month.”  Mayor Mario Garza and city commissioners recognized the staff and members from Amigos Del Valle for their commitment to strengthening the community by connecting with and supporting older adults, their families, and caregivers. “We urge every resident to take time during this month to recognize older adults and the people who serve them as central and valuable members of our community,” said Mayor Garza. 

PSJA ISD Lady Bears Softball and Baseball Teams recognized by City Commission

Mayor Mario Garza and the City Commission recognized the Lady Bears Softball and Baseball Teams for their outstanding season. Patrick Willingham, San Juan Parks and Recreation Director announced that the PSJA Lady Bears Softball Team won the Bi-District Championship title and the PSJA Bears Baseball Team claimed the District Championship title. “We commend the coaches and players for an excellent season and know that they will continue to work hard in preparation for next year,” said Willingham. “Our kids rose to the occasion and we are so proud of them for their hard work and dedication to their sport and their team,” he added.

City Commission Recognizes the Career of Dr. Jose Simon Villa

San Juan City Commissioners approved a proclamation in recognition of Pharr native Dr. Jose Simon Villa, who has led a career dedicated to increasing educational opportunities of farm-worker children and youth across America. A migrant farmworker himself, Dr. Villa dedicated his educational career to migrant education and has served various leadership roles throughout his career at Ohio State University including as Assistant Vice Provost for the Office of Minority Affairs, Director of the College Assistance Migrant Program and Program Coordinator for Hispanic Affairs. He also served as Program Consultant and State Director of Migrant Education with the Ohio Department of Education. He currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the East Coast Migrant Head Start Projects (ECMHSP), a nonprofit corporation that provides high quality and comprehensive Head Start Services to farmworker families in 38 centers located from Florida to Pennsylvania.

The San Juan City Commission approved a proclamation declaring May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the Week of May 12th through the 18th as National Police Week. San Juan Chief of Police Juan Gonzalez and members from the San Juan Police Department accepted the proclamation. The commission acknowledged the essential role that members of the San Juan Police Department play in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of San Juan. “We honor all our police officers and thank them for the great work they do in our community to protect our citizens and ensure our safety,” said Mayor Garza.

San Juan Fire Department Awards Scholarships to PJSA ISD Students

On behalf of the San Juan Fire Department, Fire Chief Tirso Garza and Assistant Chief from the Volunteer Division Orlando Casas presented four $500 scholarships to deserving students from each of the four PSJA ISD High Schools. Scholarship recipients are: Daniel Ray Garcia, Jacob Joseph Pinsinski, Danna Posada, and Itzyanna Martinez. This is the first year the Fire Department has upped the scholarships from two to four and expanded the opportunity to seniors from each of the four high schools in the district. “We want them to know how much their education means to all of us as a community,” said Casas. “This was a team effort and we thank everyone from our community who supported our fundraisers and made this possible for the students in our community,” he continued. 


The City of San Juan holds a meeting every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, convening at 6:00 p.m. at the San Juan Memorial Library Multipurpose Room located at 1010 S. Standard Ave.- San Juan.  These meetings are open to the public excluding the executive sessions, which are closed to the public by state law.
