Pharr, Texas – The City of Pharr continues its efforts to ensure that all families in the community are counted in the 2020 Census, especially now as the city and schools, like others around the nation, are facing the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Pharr City leaders will be hosting a press conference TOMORROW, Tuesday, April 28, 2020, to announce new Census initiatives, including the launch of a Census Headquarters and partnership with local school districts to ensure an accurate Census count.

The press conference will be held at 11 am TOMORROW, Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at the site of the City of Pharr’s NEW Community Census Headquarters (114 W. Cherokee) in Pharr, Texas.

“This is a very important year for the Census in our community as we have seen tremendous growth over the last ten years,” Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. said. “We have been working on Census 2020 community outreach for over a year in preparation for the start of the Census on April 1, 2020,” he added. “Since our circumstances have now changed, we want to be mindful of the health of our families, while also taking advantage of this time that our students and their families are sheltering at home to ensure that they complete the Census questionnaire either online, mail, or by phone,” continued Hernandez.

The City of Pharr continues to ramp up efforts to reach families at home and is working with Pharr Census Team Members to ensure that all families understand how to fill out the Census questionnaire. The city’s new Community Census Headquarters will provide a collective space for census part-time workers to continue reaching families. While in-person data will no longer be able to be collected, the Pharr team is focusing on phone-banking and online data collection to ensure a complete count, while practicing social distancing.

Mayor Hernandez and city leaders have also partnered with local school districts throughout their Census Campaign “Make Pharr’s Future” to educate the community on the importance of the Census. Partnering school districts include PSJA ISD, Hidalgo ISD, Valley View ISD, Vanguard Academy Charter School, and IDEA Public Schools; the purpose of the partnership is to stress the important role that parents and families play in being counted in the Census and participating in the process.

All media is invited to attend the press conference in person or to watch virtually on the city’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cityofpharr). City leaders will be implementing social distancing measures for those attending in person.
