PHARR, Texas – The Pharr City Commission approved a proclamation declaring April 2026 as Autism Awareness Month, recognizing the importance of promoting awareness, acceptance, and inclusion for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism affects communication, behavior, and social interaction.
The proclamation highlights the importance of early identification, access to services, and strong community support systems to enhance quality of life. It also recognizes the valuable contributions, strengths, and perspectives of individuals with autism, as well as the need to foster inclusive environments across schools, workplaces, and the broader community. The proclamation was presented to Minerva Barrera Garcia, who addressed the Commission regarding her advocacy efforts on behalf of her son, Andres Lobato. “We thank the City of Pharr for their efforts to advocate, educate, and include our Autism community,” said Garcia. “It is important that we continue to be inclusive, and I am thankful to members of the Pharr Police Department, city administrators, and employees who continue to support through inclusive community engagement events and opportunities for our children,” she added.
