Peñitas, Texas – Peñitas Mayor Rigo Lopez and the Peñitas City Council, in collaboration with Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Commissioner Joe Flores and the Hidalgo County Urban County Program, held a press conference earlier today to update the public on improvements to Tom Gill Road.
Mayor Lopez and Commissioner Flores announced that the City of Penitas and Hidalgo County Precinct 3 have entered into an interlocal agreement to complete construction on Tom Gill Road from Expressway 83 northward. Currently, the city has nearly $500,000 in funds allocated from Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for the purchase of material that will be used to reconstruct the road from Expressway 83 to 5 Mile Line, approximately 5 miles.
“The City of Peñitas is proud to partner with Hidalgo County Precinct 3 and the Urban County Program to make these much-needed street improvements to Tom Gill Road,” said Mayor Lopez. “This is a major roadway for our community, the county, and our students, and by leveraging partnerships and financial assets such as this one, we are able to complete this project faster, cover a larger portion of the improvement area, and ultimately, create safer roadways for all our citizens,” he continued.
Through the interlocal agreement, Hidalgo County Precinct 3 will provide the labor and equipment for the construction of this project.
“The county is partnering with the City of Peñitas to provide the manpower and machinery needed to complete this project,” stated Commissioner Joe Flores. “This project will take place in several phases and we look forward to the road improvements and the positive impact it will have for the community,” Flores continued.
City leaders look forward to this collaborative initiative as they strive to provide transportation, safety, and improved quality of life for the residents of Peñitas.
“We are thankful to our partners for assisting us in this project and ask that our citizens be patient and mindful of upcoming detours and construction as the project gets underway,” added Lopez.
