The announcement by the University of Texas Health Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine that it is expanding its healthcare offerings in South Texas with a new Cancer and Surgery Center at its McAllen Academic Medical Campus, is exciting news for City of McAllen officials, hoping to establish and develop the area around the campus as a medical center for the entire region.

Mayor Villalobos

“I am so proud of the efforts being made by UT Health RGV School of Medicine to expand the services it will provide our community,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos.  “The oncology advisory services that will be provided by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center will ensure that the medical campus here in McAllen will be a leader in providing care for the region. It is always good to bring new venues for healing with our partner, UTRGV. ”

Roy Rodriguez

According to McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E., the City of McAllen has been focusing its efforts to attract companies and jobs related to the medical field to the area, in an effort to continue to partner and expand the impact of the UT Health RGV School of Medicine. â€śThis is an important step in helping to solidify a world-class, medical community in the Rio Grande Valley, right here in McAllen, so that our residents do not have to travel hours to receive the immediate diagnosis, life-saving treatment and critical support that they need. Together, we can beat cancer right here, right now,” said Rodriguez.
