Texas Border Business
As the holiday season approaches, the City of McAllen Public Works Department reminds residents and businesses that trash and recycling pickups will continue as scheduled. Much like Santa, the Public Works team is working hard behind the scenes to ensure a wonderful holiday season.
Recycling During the Holidays: Tips and Guidelines
The holidays often bring an increase in recyclable materials and the City of McAllen Recycling Center encourages all residents to take advantage of this opportunity. In fact, about 60% of what ends up in trash bins can be recycled. Common holiday materials like cardboard boxes, gift-wrapping paper and bags, glass bottles, and soda cans are all recyclable.
The City of McAllen Recycling Center accepts the following materials: paper; cardboard; plastics (types 1 and 2); aluminum and tin cans; glass bottles and jars.
To ensure recyclables are properly processed, residents are urged to separate organic waste and not place food scraps in recycling bins. Instead, compost them to reduce landfill waste and create nutrient-rich soil for gardens. Also, save space by flattening large cardboard boxes before placing them in recycling bins.
Items Not Accepted in Blue Recycling Bins
While the holidays bring many opportunities to recycle, several items commonly found during this time of year cannot be accepted. Residents should refrain from placing the following items in recycling bins: styrofoam (any kind); disposable plates and cutlery; food waste; liquids; string lights; plastic bags or film; and clothing.
As a reminder, the City of McAllen has a simple rule for recycling: “If in doubt, throw it out!” This helps prevent contamination and ensures that only recyclable materials are processed.
Holiday Hours for McAllen Recycling Center
The McAllen Recycling Center and its drop-off location, located at 4101 N Bentsen Road, will be closed on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1). Visitors should arrange to visit the Recycling Center before or after these dates.
Natural Christmas Tree Drop-Off
The McAllen Recycling Center and Composting Facility are accepting natural Christmas tree drop-offs throughout January. Trees must be free of decorations, as they will be turned into mulch and be available for sale with a delightful natural pine scent. Fun fact: The smell of pine can help repel mosquitoes.
