“The need is great and urgent, but too costly to be able to be funded completely by the current revenue collected into the general fund of the City budget. Fortunately, there exist options under the Texas Division of Emergency Management FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to submit projects for consideration for funding,” said City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E.

The FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program measures any sustainable action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from future disasters. The HMGP supports cost-effective post-disaster projects and is the longest running mitigation program among FEMA’s three grant programs. Studies have shown that every $1 spent equals $4 of future damages mitigated.

This project will include excavating a stormwater detention facility and installing 7,700-linear feet of new storm sewer, related appurtenances, and pavement repair.

“This project is sorely needed and will provide tremendous relief to the residents of this subdivision who experienced flooding even with nominal rain,” said Mayor Darling.  “I hope that once this project is completed, the residents will not have to worry about flooding with future rain.”

The contract amount is $2,438,795.75 and the work is to be completed in 145-calendar days. The grant funds the project at a reimbursement of 75% of the total project cost.
