The City of McAllen Office of Communications won three TAMI Award of Excellence at the annual Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers conference held this week in Denton. TAMIO is a division of the Texas Municipal League.

The three awards were for:

  • Communications Planning:  2018 Bond Election
  • Best Media Relations: 2017 McAllen Holiday Parade
  • Best Use of Unplanned Social Media: 2018 June Flood

“The City of McAllen Office of Communications has set the standard in the Rio Grande Valley for how to effectively and positively keep the media and public informed of all relevant projects or information that they need,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. “That our department has won three Awards of Excellence, judged by Texas municipal officers, speaks volumes for the talent and dedication that helps to promote the City of McAllen.”

The McAllen Holiday Parade earned additional recognition across the state, further proving its success as a community favorite and major destination event hosted and coordinated by the City of McAllen, this time winning for the media relations campaign for the annual event.

“Winning an Award of Excellence for the McAllen Holiday Parade Media Relations highlights the relationship that we have established with our local media partners and by our own communications team to create excitement, buzz, and provide information for the community about the parade for all to enjoy,” said Assistant City Manager Joe Vera.

The City of McAllen competes in the population category over 100,00 against such cities as Arlington, Garland, Harris County Emergency Management, and San Antonio Water System.  This year, there were almost 500 entries in 24 categories, a record number of entries for the organization.  TAMIO was developed because of the increasingly complex role of public information in municipal government.
