The City of McAllen is working closely with members of Congress to safeguard its direct air service to Mexico City following the recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Transportation, under the direction of President Donald Trump, that several airline routes between the United States and Mexico would be disrupted.

In a statement released by the city, officials emphasized the economic and cultural importance of maintaining the McAllen-to-Mexico City connection, describing it as a critical link for trade, travel, and family ties in the Rio Grande Valley.

“This route has been a strong performer for McAllen and the entire Rio Grande Valley,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “It’s more than a flight, it’s a vital economic artery that supports commerce, tourism, and family connections across our binational region.”

Tawil noted that the route’s suspension could affect local businesses that depend on reliable air connectivity for cross-border trade. “We recognize the importance of protecting the livelihoods of our constituents and the economic momentum we’ve built together,” he added.

Mayor Javier Villalobos echoed those concerns, stressing that the flight connection represents more than economic activity — it also supports the cultural and social bonds that define the border region. “McAllen stands at the front line of regional connectivity, commerce, and community,” Villalobos said. “A ban on flights to Mexico strikes at the heart of our binational economy, our families, and our cultural ties.”

According to the city’s statement, McAllen officials are working in coordination with U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, as well as Representatives Monica De La Cruz, Vicente Gonzalez, and Henry Cuellar, to ensure that federal actions take into account the realities of life and commerce in border communities.

The City of McAllen is advocating for a resolution that restores normal air service while aligning with national security objectives. “We’re grateful for the leadership and responsiveness of our congressional delegation,” Tawil said. “Their partnership is essential to ensuring McAllen’s continued growth and prosperity.”

The city also encouraged both the U.S. Department of Transportation and its Mexican counterpart to work quickly to restore full network connectivity between the two countries.

McAllen International Airport has long served as a vital hub for business travelers, families, and tourists crossing between Texas and central Mexico. Local leaders say the route to Mexico City plays a major role in strengthening economic integration and mobility throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

For now, the city advises passengers with travel-related questions to contact their airlines directly for updates regarding flight schedules and rebooking options.
