City of McAllen Facilities Serve as Cooling Centers, May 25th-27th

As temperatures and heat indexes continue to soar, the City of McAllen would like to remind the public that the following facilities are open and available to the community as cooling centers.

From Saturday, May 25 until Monday, May 27from 8 AM to 8 PM, the McAllen Community Centers are open for patrons to come in and cool off.  Take a seat in the lobby to access wi-fi or recharge phones.  

Below are some tips to stay safe in the heat:

In north McAllen, visit the Lark Community Center, at 2601 Lark Ave,. Call (956) 681 – 3340 for more information. 

In central McAllen visit Las Palmas Community Center, at 1921 N. 25th St. Call (956) 681 – 3350 for more information. 

In south McAllen, visit Palm View Community Center at 3401 Jordan Rd.. Call (956) 681 – 3360 for more information.

Additionally, everyone is welcome to cool off, plug in their devices, and use the free wi-fi at any McAllen Public Library location, including Main Library, 4001 N. 23rd St.; Lark Branch Library, 2601 Lark Ave.; and Palm View Branch Library, 3401 N. Jordan Ave. The public doesn’t need a library card to visit the library, just to take materials home. Call for the most up-to-date information on branch operations.

• McAllen Youth Baseball Complex (8201 N. 29th St) 

• Palmview Community Center 3401 Jordan Rd.)

Hours of operation:

Monday 9 AM to 9 PM (Holiday hours)

Tuesday 3 PM to 8 PM

Thursday 3 PM to 8 PM

Friday 3 PM to 8 PM

Saturday 9 AM to 9 PM

Sunday 9 AM to 9 PM

We also recommend that folks walk the mall or shop any of the many retailers in the community to stay cool during the heat of the day.

Additionally, McAllen would like to offer some tips to stay safe during the heat:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, one cup every 15-20 minutes even when not thirsty. 
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks.
  • Eat light: the more calories taken in; the more body heat produced.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing if safe for job. 
  • Apply 15 SPF or higher sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors.
  • Those with chronic medical conditions or taking medication should ask their doctor about heat-related illness. 
  • Work shorter shifts to get accustomed to the higher temperature.
  • Take frequent rest breaks in cool or shaded areas.
