McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos and the City Commission have announced a $1,500 donation to the McAllen Housing Facility Corporation’s 5th Annual Bobby Calvillo Home is Where the Heart is 5K Run and Walk. The contribution comes from the Mayor’s State of the City funds, not taxpayer dollars.

“The City of McAllen is proud to support this event, which not only honors Bobby Calvillo’s legacy but continues his mission of helping families achieve stability through housing,” said Mayor Villalobos.

The McAllen Housing Facility Corporation (MHFC) works to provide safe, affordable housing and supportive services to families in need. Through its initiatives, the organization aims to build stronger and more stable communities across the Rio Grande Valley.

The 5th Annual Robert “Bobby” Calvillo Home Is Where the Heart Is 5K Run and Walk will take place on February 28, 2026, at Firemen’s Park, located at 201 N. 1st Street in McAllen. According to the MHFC, the event is designed to “bring together community members, local leaders, and supporters to honor the lasting legacy of the late Bobby Calvillo.”

Robert Andrew “Bobby” Calvillo was widely known for his dedication to affordable housing and community development in South Texas. As president and CEO of Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc., Calvillo led efforts to expand homeownership opportunities for working families. “Bobby believed that everyone deserves a safe and stable place to call home,” said a statement on the organization’s website.

Event organizers describe the 5K as both a fundraiser and a community engagement initiative. Sponsorship opportunities are available, and proceeds will benefit housing programs for low-income residents. The MHFC noted that the event “ties together community wellness, public housing advocacy, and the celebration of a local leader whose work transformed lives.”

By hosting the event at Firemen’s Park, organizers hope to make it accessible to a wide range of participants. “We want this event to be a space where people from all walks of life can come together to celebrate progress and continue the work Bobby started,” an MHFC representative said.

For the City of McAllen, the donation underscores its commitment to partnerships that promote community well-being. As Mayor Villalobos stated, “This is about investing in our people, supporting meaningful causes, and recognizing those who have dedicated their lives to making McAllen a better place.”
