McAllen, Texas — Following the U.S. Department of Transportation’s announcement disrupting several airline routes between the United States and Mexico, the City of McAllen is actively working with its federal congressional leaders to safeguard the direct air connection between McAllen International Airport and Mexico City.
“This route has been a strong performer for McAllen and the entire Rio Grande Valley,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “It’s more than a flight, it’s a vital economic artery that supports commerce, tourism, and family connections across our binational region. Tawil added, “We recognize the importance of protecting the livelihoods of our constituents and the economic momentum we’ve built together.”
“McAllen stands at the front line of regional connectivity, commerce, and community,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “A ban on flights to Mexico strikes at the heart of our binational economy, our families, and our cultural ties.”
McAllen is in active dialogue with U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, and Representatives Monica De La Cruz, Vicente Gonzalez, and Henry Cuellar to ensure federal actions reflect the realities and needs of border communities. Together, they are exploring solutions that preserve critical air connectivity while supporting national security goals.
“We’re grateful for the leadership and responsiveness of our congressional delegation,” Tawil added. “Their partnership is essential to ensuring McAllen’s continued growth and prosperity. McAllen encourages the U.S. Department of Transportation and its counterpart in Mexico to work quickly to fully restore full network connectivity.”
