The City of McAllen Mayor & City Commission approved an $820,000 budget amendment to begin construction on a regional animal care facility for Palm View Animal Society. The PVAS shelter for stray, neglected and abused dogs and cats will house these animals for the City of McAllen.
“We are proud of the change in philosophy that the City of McAllen has developed in our approach to animal care services,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. “This investment and responsibility in the care of stray, neglected and abused dogs and cats is one that the City of McAllen will bear alone if necessary, but we invite any of our neighboring communities to help us in the construction of a shelter that will benefit our area.”
McAllen city officials are looking to construct the PVAS shelter at the current location in Edinburg. Currently, that shelter location is inadequate to house a large number of animals and lacks covered, indoor kennels to keep dogs and cats out of the elements.
Next steps will include a request for proposals from interested architecture firms. Construction is expected to begin sometime in 2025.
