Before the COVID-19 pandemic, McAllen Parks & Recreation Department community centers (Las Palmas, Lark, and Palmview), thanks to a partnership with Amigos del Valle, provided 300 meals to seniors on a daily basis, including some homebound deliveries.

The recent social distancing and shelter in place requirements, especially for our elderly community, could have put our senior citizens in jeopardy of not having a daily meal.

To help ease the influx of seniors needing meals, H-E-B has stepped in to help ease the burden of local non-profit agencies throughout the area, including Amigos del Valle, to ensure that seniors continue receiving their meals.  Meals are delivered to registered seniors in the McPARD senior programs throughout McAllen or can be picked up as a drive-thru service at Las Palmas Community Center, 1921 N 25th St., on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Today, McAllen City Commissioners Javier Villalobos, Dist. 1; Omar Quintanilla, Dist. 3; Tania Ramirez, Dist. 4; and Victor “Seby” Haddad, Dist. 5 helped prep the meals and provided the meals to McAllen senior citizens as they came to pick-up the meals.

Seniors over the age of 60, who wish to sign up for this program can head to Las Palmas and fill out a brief application and if they qualify, based on income, they will be enrolled in the program and will begin to receive the meals.
