EDINBURG, Texas – The City of Edinburg, the City’s Cultural Arts’ Juneteenth Committee, and Village in the Valley (VIVA) proudly celebrated this year’s MLK Day of Service, with an engaging “Clean Up” initiative at Restlawn Cemetery and Rising Star Historic Black Church in Edinburg.
Restlawn Cemetery, nestled in the northwest corner of Hillcrest Cemetery, holds an abundance of Edinburg’s historical significance as the final resting place for Edinburg’s African American community since its establishment in 1928. Recognized as a historical site by the Texas Historical Commission in 2007, a marker adorns the premises, symbolizing its cultural significance. Approximately 60 individuals rest peacefully at this historical site.
The Rising Star Baptist Church and Fellowship Hall, with roots tracing back to May 1938, stands as a testament to community service. Purchased from the Moore Airfield base in the 1960s, this cherished establishment continues to serve the community.
