Edinburg, Texas – The City of Edinburg is continuing its support of The UTRGV School of Medicine with the presentation of a check for $1 million, 9-10:30 a.m. Sept. 28 in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center on the UTRGV Edinburg Campus.
The City of Edinburg and other localities have committed to give money annually to support the School of Medicine, as part of a memorandum of understanding UTRGV has signed with those local governments.
“We are grateful to the City of Edinburg for its continued support of the School of Medicine,” said Dr. John H. Krouse, UTRGV executive vice president for Health Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine. “The funds support faculty recruitment, student support services, and curriculum development.”
The City of Edinburg has committed $1 million annually to the School of Medicine.
There currently are 156 students enrolled in the UTRGV medical program, and Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina said the city’s contribution solidifies its commitment to both the university and its School of Medicine.
“The Council and I are happy to give our full support to UTRGV’s School of Medicine,” Molina said. “It’s a win-win situation. Our students don’t have to leave the Valley to go to medical school anymore. It makes it so much more affordable and accessible to our community.
“Plus, the School of Medicine is also helping to expand affordable healthcare services – both primary and specialty care – with clinics across the entire Rio Grande Valley. That’s good news for everyone,” Molina said.
