City of Brownsville Prepares for Expected Steady Rainfall

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – As the Rio Grande Valley braces for significant rainfall, this week, the City of Brownsville is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. The National Weather Service has forecasted 6 to 8 inches of rain, over the next week, across Brownsville starting Tuesday, June 18.

City departments including the Office of Emergency Management, Brownsville Fire Department, Brownsville Police Department, Engineering and Public Works, Brownsville Metro, Internal Services, and others are actively preparing for potential impacts from excessive rainfall.

Preparations involve comprehensive measures such as the cleaning and maintenance of stormwater inlets by Engineering and Public Works teams. City employees have been working for weeks now – since Hurricane Season started June 1st. Focus areas include downtown Brownsville, Southmost and West Brownsville. Portable pumps are also being strategically stationed at Tradition Estates neighborhood as a precautionary measure.

In addition, the Drainage, Hot Shot, and Greens branches are diligently clearing debris along resacas and ditches. This includes the trimming of trees to mitigate potential hazards over roadways. The Fire and Police Departments are on stand-by ready to assist the community should the need arise.

To support residents in preparing for the weather event, the City of Brownsville will offer a sandbag distribution on Tuesday, June 18, between 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM at the following locations:

Fronton Warehouse, 298 McNair Drive (formerly known as E. Fronton), Brownsville, Texas 78520

City of Brownsville’s Public Works Office Building C, 6035 Jaime J. Zapata, Brownsville, Texas 78521

Residents and businesses are eligible to receive up to six (6) sandbags per household. A utility bill and an identification card is required to receive sandbags. 

Residents are strongly encouraged to register for the City’s Emergency Alert System, designed to provide timely and critical information to keep the community informed and safe, especially as hurricane season begins. The emergency messaging system will deliver alerts directly to registered residents. Sign up for notifications at www.BrownsvilleTX.gov
