Brownsville, TX – The City of Brownsville prepares to launch its “100- Days of Safety2024” campaign and host a ribbon cutting ceremony for it. The campaign is a vital initiative aimed at enhancing road safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians throughout the bustling summer months. This annual campaign focuses on raising awareness among motorists regarding the increasing presence ofcyclists and pedestrians, particularly on the roads and trails across the City.
The primary objective of this initiative is to significantly reduce the incidents and accidents on public roadways and crosswalks within Brownsville. As part of the campaign, the City will host a press conference scheduled for Wednesday, June 12 at 10:00 AM at the CMD/CVB Complex, located at 1312 E. Adams St. in downtown Brownsville.
“As Brownsville continues to grow, it is our utmost priority to ensure that our roads, cycling and walking trails are safe for all community members,” said Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. “We are committed to providing our residents and visitors with secure trailways and roadways. Safety is not just a campaign for us; it’s a year-round commitment.”
“By expanding and maintaining our network of infrastructure makes it safer for all road users – motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians,” said City Commissioner At-Large “B” Dr. Rose Gowen. “Our City trails aim toencourage residents to adopt healthier lifestyles while ensuring their safety on these pathways. We are a City government that is dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle through improved infrastructure.”
In an effort to boost safety awareness, the City has strategically placed new safety signs in high-traffic andhigh-incident zones. These areas include City Hall, International Boulevard, and Lincoln Street; Paredes Line Road and Morrison Road; Historic Battlefield and Boca Chica Boulevard; International Boulevard, Boca Chica Boulevard, and Old Highway 77; as well as Ruben Torres Sr. Boulevard and Central Boulevard.
“Recognizing the potential risks at high-traffic and connecting areas, we are committed to providing comprehensive education on public safety and ensuring proper signage is situated where it is needed,”said Joel Garza, Multimodal Transportation Director at the City of Brownsville. “Our goal is to foster a safe, accessible, and efficient transportation environment for everyone, emphasizing the need for vigilance and cooperation from all road and trail users.”
The “100-Days of Safety 2024” campaign is a collective effort by the City’s departments, which includeMultimodal Transportation, Brownsville Police Department, Municipal Court, City Elected Officials and Leadership, and the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization. Coming together as ONE City creates a sustainable commitment to a safer and more inclusive environment for all residents of Brownsville and surrounding communities.
Residents and visitors alike are urged to stay alert and practice safety during their daily commutes, whether by bike, foot, or vehicle.
