BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The City of Brownsville is proud to announce that Jennifer M. Avendano, First Assistant City Attorney, is the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Brad D. Bailey Assistant City/County Attorney Award. The recognition comes from the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA). Thisesteemed recognition is awarded to an assistant local government attorney who has demonstratedexceptional skill, ethics, and dedication to public service, qualities exemplified by the award’s namesake, Brad D. Bailey.

Ms. Avendano was selected among a highly competitive pool of nominees from across the United Statesand Canada, reflecting her outstanding achievements in the field of municipal law. The IMLA, a non-profit organization committed to advancing the education and interests of local government lawyers, annuallyrecognizes an individual who excels in the practice of law and provides significant contributions to the community and maintains an exemplary professional reputation.

Ms. Avendano has served with distinction as a First Assistant City Attorney with the City of Brownsvillesince 2023 and as an Assistant City Attorney since 2018. She has been pivotal in spearheading several keyinitiatives that have significantly benefited the community. Her commitment to the law is evident in her innovative approach to legal complexities and her proactive engagement in training and mentoring within the legal community.

Ms. Avendano holds a Juris Doctor from the Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law. She has been a member of the bar since 2007, dedicating her career to public service.
