City of Alamo Day at the Texas State Capitol

The City of Alamo was honored at the state capitol this past week with a special resolution proclaiming April 26th, 2023 as “City of Alamo Day”.

ALAMO, Texas – The City of Alamo was honored at the state capitol this past week with a special resolution proclaiming April 26th, 2023 as “City of Alamo Day”. Comm. Okie Salinas, Comm. JR. Garza, Comm. Maria Del Pilar Garza, Mayor Pro-Tem Pete Morales along with Alamo City Manager Bobby Salinas and Assistant City Manager Alexandra Rangel joined a delegation consisting of members of the Alamo Chamber of Commerce, Alamo Economic Development Corporation Board members, and City of Alamo staff for the special recognition at the State Capitol. State Representative Armando “Mando” Martinez laid out House Resolution No. 1211 in the House Chamber while State Senator Morgan LaMantia honored the group in the Senate chamber. The resolution recognized the significant growth that the City of Alamo has experienced in recent years as well as the contributions that the city has made to the state of Texas.

The Alamo delegation also took the visit as an opportunity to meet with several Valley legislators to discuss funding opportunities for a variety of different projects within the city. State legislators meeting for the 88th legislative session are currently facing a historic $33 billion budget surplus for the upcoming biennium, a record for the state of Texas. Through effective meetings and collaboration with area representatives, the City of Alamo has been able to secure over $3.6 million in budget riders for the upcoming biennium. These include $1.5 million being allocated for several park improvements around the city, $2 million for the relocation of a lift station on Tower Road, and $100,000 for the purchase of public safety equipment. As the 88th session nears sine die, the Alamo delegation met with Representative Armando “Mando” Martinez and State Senator Morgan LaMantia to discuss the final steps for the budget process.

Alamo’s own Commissioner Maria Del Pilar Garza was also honored at the state capitol. Representative Armando “Mando” Martinez introduced House Resolution No. 1210 in the House Chamber. The resolution honored Commissioner Maria Del Pilar Garza for her many years of public service to the community. Commissioner Maria Del Pilar Garza has been an active member of the Alamo community where for 39 years she was employed by the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District in many roles including teacher, counselor, assistant principal, principal, and central office administrator. Commissioner Maria Del Pilar Garza has taken an active role in the improvement and growth of the City of Alamo by serving on many boards including the Alamo Economic Development Corporation Board, Friends of the Alamo Museum, and the Alamo Board of Commissioners as well as has selflessly volunteered her time and given back to the community by volunteering for many sports and recreation programs by the Alamo Parks and Recreation department, in order to ensure a positive avenue for success for the children of Alamo.

With the leadership provided by the entire Alamo Board of Commissioners, City of Alamo officials were able to make a strong case for the continued support of state officials in order to ensure that the City of Alamo continues to be a healthy and growing community.
