IDEA Public Schools in the Rio Grande Valley hosted a “Principal for a Day” event on Tuesday, April 8 at four of its schools across the area. As part of this initiative, local mayors stepped into the role of principal and experience firsthand the daily responsibilities of running a school.
RGV City Mayors visited the following schools to serve as “Principal for the Day”:
- IDEA Palmview: Mayor Ricardo Villarreal, Mayor of Palmview
- 4100 N Schuerbach Rd, Palmview, TX 78572
- IDEA Weslaco: Mayor Adrian Gonzalez, Mayor of Weslaco
- 2931 E Sugarcane Dr, Weslaco, TX 78599
- IDEA Los Encinos: Mayor Javier Villalobos, Mayor of McAllen
- 5400 S Ware Rd, McAllen, TX 78503
- IDEA Alamo: Mayor J.R. Garza, Mayor of Alamo

Throughout the event, mayors engaged with students, interacted with faculty and staff, and took part in various school leadership duties, such as: observing classrooms and providing feedback to teachers, assisting with cafeteria duties, making announcements over the school intercom, and more.

“We were thrilled to have our community join us in our efforts to provide our scholars with a unique and meaningful learning experience,” said Jill Dominguez, Area Superintendent of IDEA RGV. “This unique experience highlights the importance of community engagement in education and demonstrates the dedication of our local leaders to the success of our students. By working together, we can continue to create opportunities that inspire and empower our students to reach their full potential.”
