LAREDO, Texas – The City of Laredo Mayor, Pete Saenz, and Members of Council presented several well-deserved recognitions to outstanding Laredoans during Monday’s City Council meeting. The City of Laredo continues to seek and honor the achievements of local residents who represent Laredo in other cities, placing the name of Laredo high in various fields of work or professional careers. The recognitions presented were the following:

 City of Laredo Mayor, Pete Saenz, and City Council Members with WBC International Silver Belt Featherweight Champion, Jorge Castañeda.
  • The City of Laredo recognized Jorge Castañeda, the new World Boxing Council (WBC) International Silver Belt Featherweight Champion. Mr. Castañeda accomplished this goal in London, England by defeating the current world champion, Youssef Khoumanri, by majority decision on October 30, 2021. This Laredoan boxer has a six-year professional career, which began on August 14, 2015. The City of Laredo continues to support and encourage Jorge Castañeda in his boxing career, hoping for his achievements to reach higher. Mr. Castañeda expressed his gratitude for the support received throughout his career and he continues to pursue his goal of becoming a World Champion, while proudly representing Laredo.

Mayor Pete Saenz, the Laredo City Council, and J. C. “Joe” Martin, III, Co-Trustee for the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust.
  • The City of Laredo humbly recognized and honored the life, achievement, and work of A.M. Bruni. His efforts through the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust have made an impact in the Laredo community by the generous annual donation of $3.5 million. Since 1989, the LBV Trust has donated over $100 million to various organizations in Laredo, which have made a difference in so many local families.

  • The City of Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz, together with City Council Members and Fire Chief, Guillermo Heard, presented a resolution to honor LCpl David Lee Espinoza on behalf of the Veterans Affairs Committee. The resolution expresses with honor and respect, the pride that this community feels towards LCpl Espinoza, who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country. A copy of the resolution will be provided to LCpl Espinoza’s family, the City of Rio Bravo, and LBJ High School. The City of Laredo reassures that the name of LCpl David Lee Espinoza will be remembered forever.

  • The City of Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz and Council Member Alberto Torres, Jr., presented a recognition to Daniel “Dan” Michael Firova for his role as Quality Control/First Base Coach of the Houston Astros for the 2021 Season and for his contributions towards the many accomplishments of the team including West Division Champions, American League Champions, and MLB World Series contenders. A former Major League Baseball catcher himself, Mr. Firova played for the Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Indians during the 1980s. Subsequently, Mr. Firova committed to playing for other MLB teams and held several job positions in the Mexican Baseball League. For many years, Mr. Firova and his family have served and helped the community in different ways. The city looks forward to seeing his further development in support of the Houston Astros.
