Chirchir Earns All-WAC Second Team Honors To Lead At WAC Cross Country Championships

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Junior Abraham Chirchir earned All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Second Team honors to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) cross country teams at the WAC Championships, hosted by California Baptist, on Saturday at the Riverside Agricultural Operations Course.

Chirchir finished 14th out of 101 with a time of 24:25.4. Alex Munoz also finished in the top half of the pack, coming in 42nd at 25:19.1. Florian LePallec of California Baptist won the individual championship with a time of 23:18.5.

As a team, the men had an average time of 25:45 and 247 points to place 10th out of 13. California Baptist won the team championship with a perfect 15 points on an average time of 23:45.

On the women’s side, freshman Samantha Gonzalez led UTRGV with a time off 22:30.0, 1.4 seconds off her personal record (PR), to finish 44th out of 97. Three runners set new PR’s, including freshman Weslaco alumAaliyah Garza (22:37.6), junior Anahi Romo (22:38.5), and freshman Sharyland alum Delilah Vega(25:30.1). Irene Rono of Abilene Christian won the individual championship with a time of 19:44.2.

As a team, the women had an average time of 23:10 and 277 points to finish 11th out of 13. Utah Valley won the team championship with 34 points and an average time of 20:32.

UTRGV is back in action on Nov. 12 at the NCAA South Central Regional, hosted by Baylor. The women compete in a 6K at 10 a.m. and the men compete in a 10K at 11 a.m.
