On September 16, 2009, The American Legion marked its 90th anniversary. To honor this milestone, the Senate and House of Representatives passed a resolution designating September 16 as “American Legion Day.” The measure was championed by Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Rep. Deborah Halvorson (D-Ill.), with bipartisan support in both chambers.

Senator Snowe praised the Legion for its enduring support of veterans and military families and its significant role in drafting landmark legislation like the GI Bill. Established by a federal charter on September 16, 1919, the Legion remains a steadfast advocate for servicemembers.
