McAllen, Texas — The Advocacy Alliance Center of Texas (AACT) wants to remind South Texas citizens that September 24, 2013 is National Voter Registration Day, a nationwide nonpartisan effort created to bring volunteers, civic groups, and organizations together to register thousands of voters on a single day.
National Voter Registration Day started with the idea that a national day revolving around voter registration would help increase access to voter registration and get people talking about their civic duty to vote in a fun, nonpartisan way. It’s about helping people find their voice. It’s not about partisan politics; it’s a way we can work together for the common good-registering people to vote.
Registering to vote is the first step in making your voice heard. In order to make sure no one is left out in 2013, AACT will join forces with local businesses, higher learning institutions, and a whole host of others across the country in an unprecedented effort to help Americans get registered to vote.
On September 24, AACT invites you to be a part of National Voter Registered Day. The election department offices will be open from 8:00am to 5:00pm to process registrations and address changes. There will also be voter registration drives at UT-Pan American, South Texas College, and UT-Brownsville on this day for anyone in the community that will be 18 years old of age before November 5, 2013. “National Voter registration is a great time to make sure that your registration is up to date or to register for the first time,” said Alberto Morales, Executive Director for AACT. “We are ready to help in any way we can with that.”
Did you know that out of every 5 people in the Rio Grande Valley, only 3 are registered to vote and of those, less than 50% go out and cast their ballot. Imagine what our elections and counties might look like if every single eligible person in the RGV was registered to vote. Voter registration is the key to getting people in South Texas to participate in the political process. That is why AACT is committed to voter registration and increasing the voter turnout.
This November, there are many important races taking place around the country. These races are about jobs, economic security, the environment, healthcare, education, and our communities. Know this- these elections will impact you and the people in your life. Voting is your chance to stand up for the issues you believe in; so don’t skip out, GetRegistered and VOTE!
