Edwards Abstract and Title Co. celebrated a historic moment during its 21st Annual State and Real Estate Forum, marking 145 years of servicein 2025. The event, with Dr. Ted Jones as the main speaker, held before a crowd of over 500 attendees, took an unexpected and heartfelt turn as CEO Byron J. Lewismade a surprise announcement, passing the role of Presidentto his son, Mark Lewis.
Vice President and Marketing Manager Elva Jackson Garza opened the event, welcoming attendees and celebrating the company’s legacy. “We take immense pride in being locally owned and operated—we live, work, and support this region. We deeply appreciate the decades of service we have provided for the Rio Grande Valley,” she said before introducing Byron J. Lewis, CEO of Edwards Abstract and Title Co.

Lewis took the stage with a mix of humor and sentiment. “What a great day it is! I must admit, there was a time when I could step up on this stage easily, but now I take those steps a little more carefully,” he joked. He reflected on his deep sense of gratefulness, acknowledging his family, long-time colleagues, and the entire Edwards Abstract team.
“My wife, Keely, is here, and A. Monroe, who hired me straight out of law school in 1985. Every partner of Edwards Abstract is here today, and I have to give them a plug—Jim reminded me, ‘This is great, but make sure you remind everyone to do business with us!’” he said.
Lewis emphasized that while the company is proud of its 145-year legacy, its focus remains on the future. “Our customers want to know that we are up to date with the latest technology, expertise, and industry trends—and I assure you, we are.”
Then, in a moment that surprised the audience, Lewis made a major announcement. “I have an important announcement, and I couldn’t think of a better time to do it. I am honored to announce that Mark Lewis will be the new President of Edwards Abstract and Title Co.“
The room erupted in applause as he continued, “Serving as president has been the greatest honor of my professional life, but don’t worry—I’m not going anywhere! I will continue serving as CEO, and I could not be more thrilled to pass the torch to someone who has worked tirelessly, has the ambition and vision to lead, and is dedicated to the legacy of Edwards Abstract. Mark, congratulations! Come on up.”
Mark Lewis, the youngest person in Texas to obtain all four major title industry certifications, stepped onto the stage, visibly moved by the moment. “Wow—thank you, Byron!” he began. “I think this is one of our biggest moments ever. We have over 500 people here today, and I’m totally not nervous at all… okay, maybe just a little!”
Mark reflected on his career, from working with Stewart Title in San Antonioto joining Edwards Abstract in 2019. “It is truly an honor to work for a storied company like Edwards Abstract and Title Co.,” he said. He recounted a conversation with attorney Omar Ochoa, who had always known he wanted to be a lawyer.
“Well, that was me with title insurance. While other kids dreamed of being astronauts or race car drivers, I was the kid who wanted to work in title insurance,” he joked. “Yes, I know—it’s weird! But here I am, and I still love explaining what title insurance is every day.”
Mark expressed gratitude for two key decisions in his life. “First, marrying my wife, Jordan. She is brilliant—she does marketing for Edwards, and she is so invested in our company that she tracks every closing that doesn’t go through us!” he said with a laugh. “Second, coming back to the Rio Grande Valley to work for Edwards. This company, this community—it’s where I want to be.”
As the event drew to a close, Byron J. Lewisgave a final, heartfelt remark. “As a father, I can say this moment is more meaningful to me than celebrating any of my successes. It is far more fulfilling to acknowledge Mark’s achievements and see him step into this role. So, thank you for allowing me to share this with all of you today.”
Mark Lewis, who has served as Vice President of Operationsand has led eight full-service offices across South Texas, will now take the helm as President of Edwards Abstract and Title Co., ensuring that the company’s 145-year legacy continues to thrive.
