EDINBURG, Texas — In the early morning hours of January 26, 2026, Edinburg Police officers responded to the 900 block of S. Veterans Blvd. after receiving a report of an open safe discovered in a parking lot. Upon arrival, officers recovered the safe along with a black ski mask, a set of keys, and an Apple AirTag.
Later that day, around noon, the owner of a smoke shop located in the 1900 block of W. University Drive reported that a burglary had occurred at approximately 4:15 a.m. According to the owner, two male suspects stole a safe containing nearly $4,000. Investigators found no signs of forced entry and learned that the suspects were believed to be former employees. During the investigation, one of the suspects was identified as 20-year-old Arod Lopez‑Uresti of Elsa, Texas, a former employee of the business.
On February 3, 2026, Edinburg Police Investigators arrested Lopez‑Uresti during a traffic stop in Elsa. A subsequent search warrant executed at his residence resulted in the recovery of additional evidence tying him to the burglary. Lopez‑Uresti will be charged with Burglary of a Building, a state jail felony.
The search for the second suspect remains ongoing.
