Fernando Ramos, a Kinesiology major at South Texas College, is paving the way for his dream of becoming a coach and mentor. As a first-generation college student, he is focused on using his education to create a brighter future for himself, his family and others.

“Sports have always been a big part of my life,” Ramos said. “They’ve helped me stay focused and have brought me closer to my friends. I want to share those lessons with others.”

A graduate of Mission High School, Ramos wasn’t always sure about going to college. During his senior year, a teacher introduced him to kinesiology and explained the opportunities it could offer in coaching and teaching. Inspired by that conversation, Ramos decided to enroll at STC.

Now in his third semester, Ramos is excelling in classes like Anatomy and Physiology, while staying active as a member of the intramural flag football team. His involvement in sports at STC has helped him connect with other peers and stay motivated.

Ramos draws inspiration from his father, who has always encouraged him to work hard.

“My dad tells me to keep pushing and never give up,” Ramos said. “That advice helps me stay on track, even when things feel overwhelming.”

Being the first in his family to attend college hasn’t been easy. Ramos sometimes feels the pressure of setting an example for his younger siblings and proving that his hard work will pay off.

“I remind myself that this journey is worth it,” he said. “I want to make my family proud and show my siblings what’s possible.”

Ramos plans to graduate from STC in the fall of 2025 with an associate degree in Kinesiology. From there, he hopes to transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio to pursue a bachelor’s degree. His ultimate goal is to become a head coach at a high school or college.

“I want to do more than just coach sports,” Ramos said. “I want to teach young people about teamwork, discipline and resilience, skills they can use in every part of their lives.”

Ramos is excited about his future and grateful for the opportunities STC has provided.

“This experience has helped me grow as a person,” he said. “I’m ready to take the next steps and make a difference.”
