Mission, Texas – Bryan Elementary administration and staff is committed to helping develop the Parent Leadership Academy through Parenting Partners. One parent, Maricela Garcia, was extremely committed to the program and was even more determined to participate in their Curbside Graduation. She was so determined that she walked 30 minutes to get to the campus in very warm weather to receive her completion certification.
“This is a great program, and I would recommend it for all parents to take,” states Maricela Garcia. “It is totally worth the effort, and it is a good thing to learn something new every day. This will help us out so much and I just loved it.”
The program focuses on providing parents with information and tools that can help them better understand their child’s needs. Although Parenting Partners could not do the classes in person the classes went virtual, and parents were able to participate. This year was no different when a total of six parents participated and completed the virtual program. The Parental Liaison, Shary Treviño, has gone above and beyond to help the parents reach their goal of earning their certificate of completion. She helped Garcia by personally delivering worksheets and information when she didn’t have access to the internet.
Garcia has two children that attend Bryan Elementary, and she knows that what she learned from the classes are of benefit to her and she knows that knowledge will help her better assist her children at home. As for her walking to her graduation, she simply said, “If the mountain can’t come to us, then we must go to the mountain.”
