BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The City of Brownsville’s Planning and Redevelopment Services Department recently was recognized with the 2024 Richard R. Lillie, FAICP Planning Excellence Recognition Program award. This esteemed recognition is awarded to planning departments that demonstrate exceptional standards in professional city planning.

The Richard R. Lillie, FAICP Planning Excellence Recognition Program acknowledges those departments within Texas that substantially increase community awareness of the vital role of planning. The accolade highlights the efforts that aid in economic development, enhance community image, and support educational initiatives for staff and appointed planning officials.

This year, the City of Brownsville’s department stood out for its innovative approaches and dedication to fostering sustainable growth and development.

“This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our Planning and Redevelopment Services Department,” said Helen Ramirez, ICMA-CM, AICP, Brownsville City Manager. “Their commitment to high standards in urban planning and the renaissance to our historic downtown has contributed to our City’s growth and played a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for all our residents during a time of record permitting growth. This recognition underscores the alignment of our vision to continuously improve and innovate in how we serve our community.”

705 permits issued for new detached single-family homes: total of 1,123 in FY 2024.

18,606 building inspections were performed, averaging 75 per workday.
