Brownsville, Texas – The City of Brownsville’s Multimodal Transportation Department will host a special edition of Cyclobia, the City’s celebration of cycling, walking, and community health and wellness. The Cyclobia: Cycling the Streets Art in Motion edition will take place on Friday, September 20, 2024, starting at 6:00 PM at Southern Pacific Linear Park, located at E 6th Street & E Ringgold Street.

Cyclobia promises an exciting evening for participants of all ages. The event will feature a Fun Walk-Run track, acycling/walking track, live entertainment, and include door prizes donated by the Brownsville City Commission, City Manager, Public Health and Wellness Department, Parks and Recreation Department, Gladys Porter Zoo and the Children’s Museum of Brownsville. The route will take participants from Linear Park to Market Square and along ascenic tour of the nine vibrant murals throughout the downtown area.

For this special event, Cyclobia will kick off with a 1-Mile Fun Walk-Run, from 6:00 PM to 6:30PM at Linear Park. This family-friendly segment is designed to include everyone—from children and young adults to senior citizens. The Fun Walk-Run serves as a warm-up for the main event and offers a perfect opportunity for community members to engage and enjoy the festivities.

“Cyclobia is more than just cycling; it’s about creating health and wellness awareness, enjoying our City and creating asense of community,” said Dr. Rose Gowen, Brownsville City Commissioner At- Large “B.” “I want to encourage families, friends, and neighbors to come out and experience this fun and healthy event together.”

“The Walk-Run is a wonderful way to get the whole family involved,” said Linda C. Macias, Brownsville City Commissioner District 2. “I invite everyone to join us as we explore the beautiful murals and celebrate the vibrant culture of downtown Brownsville.”

The Cycling/Walking portion of Cyclobia will start at 7:00PM at Linear Park. Through the course of thecycling/walking, participants are asked to take selfies with the downtown murals and post them on their respective Facebook page with the hashtag “#CyclobiaBTX.” Those who visit all nine murals will verify their mural visits at the Linear Park Registration Table, with the Multimodal Department staff. There they will receive a Cyclobia DrawingTicket. This ticket will enter them into a drawing for the exciting prizes, including mountain bicycles and other fantasticitems. Participants should note that winners must be present to win. The drawing is scheduled for 8:00 PM at Linear Park.

For those interested in cycling but do not own a bicycle, the Multimodal Transportation Department will offer bicycle rentals starting at 6:00 PM at Linear Park. Additionally, a Bicycle Rodeo will be held at Linear Park, providing a fun and educational experience for all attendees.

Adding to the festivities, Market Square will come alive with live entertainment from Revival of the Cultural Arts Center performances.

Downtown Street Closures

Commuters who accustom to drive through downtown should take note that streets around the Cyclobia route will beclosed at 5:45PM to allow for the preparation of the event. Commuters should drive with caution and be prepared to take alternate routes, around the downtown area, to get to their destination. Street closure map/Cyclobia route may beaccessed here: CycloBia – September 20, 2024 (arcgis.com)
