BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The City of Brownsville Public Library System is launching its Annual Summer Reading Program, beginning June 3rd and continuing through July 31st. This enriching program is open to community members of all ages, offering a spectacular opportunity for both personal growth and fun.

The 2024 Summer Reading Program kicks off with in-person registration on June 3rd. Participants canregister at the Main Branch, located at 2600 Central Blvd., from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and at the SouthmostBranch, located at 4320 Southmost Road, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Those who sign up will receive a “reading log” to document their journey through books selected from a curated reading list provided by thelibrary. While there will be recommended booklists, participants do not need to choose books from the specific reading list. They will be able to choose books from the library’s collection or even read books from home.

This year’s program is packed with exciting activities including presentations from authors, paleontologists, and a magician. Additionally, there will be in-person animal presentations from the Gladys Porter Zoo and the Fragile Planet Wildlife Park, enhancing the interactive experience for participants.

The library system is set to host its annual Summer Bash, which will take place at the Southmost Branch on June 26 from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. This is a celebration of summer including food, games, carnival rides, and activities.

The library will also host a Pokémon Go! Fest at the Main Branch on July 13th beginning at 11:00 AM. Pokémon fans can participate in Pokémon-related activities and Pokémon Go! contests to win prizes.

“This isn’t just an opportunity to dive into great books—it’s also a moment for our community to recognize and embrace the profound impact that reading can have on our lives,” said Juan Guerra, Brownsville Public Library System Director. “We are excited to foster a love for reading and highlight its importance through our Summer Reading Program.”

Participants are eligible to win prizes such as an iPad, a laptop, wireless speakers, and much more. Prize drawings will be categorized by age groups: 0-4 years, 6-11 years, 12- 17 years, and 18 years and older. To be considered for these prizes, completed reading logs must be submitted by July 19th.

The program concludes with an awards ceremony scheduled for July 31st at the Main Branch beginning at6:00 PM, celebrating the achievements of all participants. Participants must be present at the Awards Ceremony to win. Registration is open until June 21st.
