Water levels in the Rio Grande are expected to increase this week in the Lower Rio Grande Valley due to greater flow arriving from the San Juan River, a Mexican tributary that enters the Rio Grande upstream from Rio Grande City, Texas-Ciudad Camargo, Tamaulipas. The Mexican government has informed the United States Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC) that excess water stored in El Cuchillo and Marte R. Gomez reservoirs on the San Juan River is being discharged through a planned release in preparation for flood season, which begins June 1. This action will make space available in the reservoirs to store potential floodwaters. As a result of the releases, interests along the Rio Grande from the San Juan River confluence to the Gulf of Mexico will observe higher than normal flows for a number of weeks.
