“We started Phase I of the South Main Drain Expansion project in April 2021 and are at 80% completion. Phase I expands from McColl Rd in McAllen to I-69C (US Hwy 281) in Edinburg. Phase II will extend an additional 3.2 miles of drainage expansion,” said Torres.

The Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 will continue to expand the South Main Drain (SMD) in Phase II in order to offer additional stormwater capacity. SMD is an existing regional drainage system constructed in the 1980s, owned and maintained by HCDD1. The SMD provides drainage to an area of approximately 27,315 acres, encompassing four cities in Hidalgo County: Edinburg, McAllen, Pharr and San Juan.

“This project extends from I69C to FM 907 (Alamo Rd) benefitting approximately 94,430 residents, plus indirect benefit to over 211,600 acres of critical infrastructures,” said Torres. Funding for the project comes at no additional cost to taxpayers. The project was designed in-house and under construction by the Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1.
