Edinburg, Texas – As part of Computer Science Education Week (December 7-11), Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV members participated in the Hour of Code. Club members were among tens of millions of students around the world to take part in this global movement and locally were part of the “Code the Town” initiative
Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV held a club-wide Hour of Code event to expose its members to computer science and coding. With or without a computer in front of them, members were able to take part in the event that focused on why computer science matters in everyday life. Member got to experience learning basic coding concepts to build a maze and practice being computer scientists writing code language to tell a computer what to do.
Computers are everywhere. We are living in a virtual world now more than ever, but fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Girls and students of color are severely underrepresented. The good news is we’re changing this for the better. The Hour of Code is a gateway toward providing all students with access to high-quality computer science education.
“We need to continue to encourage and embrace our students’ interest in computer science,” said Adriana Rendon, CEO. “Every club member deserves the chance to learn computer science to access the best careers and create technology that will change our world.”
