December 2019 – Boys & Girls Club of Pharr revealed the winner of the 2019 Youth of the Year competition at the organization’s End of Year banquet on Thursday, December 12, 2019. The winner of the Pharr regional level is 17-year-old Ashley Caballero who joined the club six years ago following the divorce of her parents and bullying from local youth. Along with two of her peers, Ashley competed to be named Boys & Girls Club of Pharr’s 2019 Youth of the Year. She was awarded the title and a $1,000 scholarship after shining through the speech, essay, question and answer segments of the competition amongst a panel of judges.
Ashley shared her story and the impact the club has made in her life “The club helped me show myself who I really am and what I’m capable of doing. The first day I walked through the club doors, I was a different person, I was a different girl. Boys & Girls Club is more than just an afterschool program. It’s a place where you can create strong friendships and participate in many unforgettable events and become a better role model.”
Through the Boys & Girls Club of Pharr, Ashley overcame her emotional troubles, bonded in new friendships who she calls family, and has risen in leadership as President of the Youth Advisory Committee. She excels in leading the committee and has discovered a passion for diplomacy and service.
Youth of the Year is a nationwide competition that has been Boys & Girls Clubs America’s premier recognition program since 1947. Every year, one exceptional member from a Boys & Girls Club takes on the winning role of National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year serves as an exemplary ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth and as a strong voice for all of our nation’s young people.
Boys & Girls Club of Pharr congratulates Ashley Caballero on this accomplishment and wishes her success as she enters the state level of the competition.
