On February 4, 2014 the BorderFest Association Border Texan of the Year Committee named Federal Judge Ricardo Hinojosa the 2014 Border Texan of the Year on Tuesday, .
This prestigious award was initiated by the Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce when they presented the first Border Texan of the Year Award in 1989 to pay tribute to an individual who has made contributions to the betterment of the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas.
The Border Texan of the Year will be honored at a dinner and reception during the annual BorderFest in Hidalgo, Texas. Proceeds from the event are given to the honoree’s chosen charitable organization.
Since the inception of the Border Texan of the Year event in 1989, the organization has awarded more than half a million dollars in scholarship funds and aid to children and students in the Rio Grande Valley.
