Texas Border Business
EDINBURG, Texas – On Tuesday, Rio Grande Valley agents discovered methamphetamine and marijuana after two failed smuggling attempts.
Yesterday afternoon, agents working at the Javier Vega, Jr. Checkpoint referred a Nissan sedan for secondary inspection following a K-9 alert. During the inspection, agents located more than 25 pounds of meth concealed inside the vehicle. Agents arrested the U.S. citizen driver and escorted him to the checkpoint for processing. The narcotics have an estimated street value of more than $800K. Border Patrol turned the case over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Later that night, Harlingen agents on patrol near La Paloma, Texas, responded to a report of several subjects running away from the Rio Grande carrying bundles of suspected narcotics. As agents arrived to the area, the smugglers abandoned the bundles and attempted to hide from authorities. After a lengthy search of the area, agents arrested three Mexican nationals who were illegally present in the United States and seized five bundles of marijuana. The drugs weighed more than 130 pounds and are worth an estimated $106K.
Border Patrol processed the subjects and cases accordingly.
Even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human smugglers continue to try these brazen attempts with zero regard for the lives they endanger nor to the health of the citizens of our great nation. The U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector will continue to safeguard the nation and community against these criminal elements.
