Border Patrol Seizes Abandoned Marijuana Near the Rio Grande

EDINBURG, Texas â€“ Rio Grande Valley Sector (RGV) Border Patrol agents seize 285 pounds of marijuana near the Rio Grande in three separate incidents.

Weslaco Border Patrol Station agents were working their assigned area near Hidalgo, Texas, discovered a small bundle of marijuana abandoned on a caliche road. A search of the area for additional bundles or subjects yielded negative results. The bundle weighed nearly four pounds with an estimated street value of over $3K.

La Grulla, Texas, Rio Grande City Border Patrol Station agents utilizing a service canine, followed footprints leading away from the river. The service canine led agents to four abandoned bundles of marijuana. Agents searched the immediate area, however, no suspects were located. The marijuana weighed approximately 183 pounds with an estimated street value of over $146K.

Fort Brown Border Patrol Station agents operating surveillance cameras, observed two individuals walking on a levee in Brownsville, Texas. The two subjects appeared to be carrying bundles on their backs. When responding agents encountered the two subjects, they dropped the bundles and ran towards the Rio Grande. The suspects were observed swimming into Mexico. The abandoned bundles of marijuana weighed approximately 98 pounds with an estimated street value of over $78K.

The marijuana was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
