EDINBURG – Senior Sarah Bonney recorded a hat trick to set a new program record for career goals while leading The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s soccer team to a 6-0 win over Alabama State on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The three goals give Bonney 26 career goals, which surpasses Andreya Barrera’s (2014-17) career mark of 25.
Sophomore Emily Zapata got the scoring started as she took the pass from Bonney and snuck it past Alabama State’s Hilda Hjaltalin (0-2) at the 9:11 mark before adding another goal at the 14:00 mark to give UTRGV (1-1) the 2-0 lead.
Bonney got her first goal of the match at the 19:27 when she ricocheted a pass off the defender and snuck it into the goal making it 3-0.
Bonney then got some help from Zapata as she took the pass into the box to score her second goal of the match, tying the program record and making it 4-0 at the 22:02 mark.
Bonney’s record setting goal came and the hat trick at the 30:09 mark as she took the cross from redshirt sophomore Isabella Marinaro in the box before putting it in the goal for the 5-0 lead.
In the second half, Marinaro got in on the scoring fun as she scored at the 51:17 mark. After taking a long pass from sophomore Shentatious Knox, Marinaro had a one-on-one with Hjaltalin sneaking the goal into the right corner to put the cap on the scoring.
Senior Kinga Szemik (1-1) and redshirt sophomore Maile Lunardi combined for the shutout as Lunardi saved the only shot on goal by Alabama State (0-2).
UTRGV will be back in action on Friday, August 30, when it travels to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first matchup of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union at 7 p.m.
