RIO HONDO – The Rio Hondo High School softball team ended a grand season as the reigning champion for District 32-4A. The team went undefeated in the district (10-0) and climbed to No. 10 in the state softball poll released by the Texas Girls Coaches Association on April 26. RHHS ended the season on May 2 with an impressive overall 13-2 record after playing Alice High School in the bi-district play-offs.
According to head coach Lizzette Esparza, 2021 marks the seventh district title for the Rio Hondo Bobcats. Last year, the softball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic; otherwise, the team could have possibly achieved eight straight district titles.
“We’re so proud of the girls for bringing home another district championship. This year they went undefeated (in the district), and their ranking went up in the state polls,” Esparza said. “There’s so much talent and teamwork on this team. Whether they win or lose a game, they’re still great athletes and students.”
“For years now our softball players have been No. 1 in their division. It speaks volumes about our players and the softball program here in Rio Hondo,” said Principal Asael Ruvalcaba. “They played extremely well this year and had a strong run. We’re very proud.”
