A variety of sandwiches, coffee, tea and snacks will be on the menu

McALLEN – The McAllen Public Library invites book readers, foodies and the rest of the community to celebrate the opening of its in-house restaurant The Black Iron Cafe on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Black Iron Café is an original creation of Valley natives Sergio Garcia, Anthony Alaniz, and Ronnie Cavazos, based on the imagery and iconography of McAllen’s historic 23rd Street rail system. The tables and serving bar are crafted from reclaimed wood, while the walls are lined with power outlets and modern fixtures.

City commissioners will be on hand for the event and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce’s ribbon cutting.

The café will serve sandwiches, wraps, coffee, tea, snacks, and a rotating assortment of daily specials to hungry patrons. Some menu samples – on a limited basis – will be served free to the public. The menu will offer healthy food options, such as teas and juices, and low-fat, high-protein lunch orders. Every order comes in low-waste packaging.
