Make the most of the fall bird migration by joining Quinta Mazatlán’s Center for Urban Ecology for a journey into the world of migratory birds on Saturday morning, November 7th, 2020. The presentation will deepen your understanding of bird migration and elucidate what we can do to help birds on their journey. You will leave the presentation empowered to make a difference for our bird community and with a deeper appreciation for these winged wonders. You can also purchase bird-friendly plants from Heep’s Native Plant Nursery at Quinta Mazatlán to jumpstart your bird habitat from 9 a.m. to noon.

The presentation, Migration Sensation & Bird-friendly Practices is about the art and science of bird migration. In the first part of the presentation, you will travel alongside warblers, hummingbirds, hawks, and more as they make their journeys, and then accompany ornithologists as they uncover the mysteries of migration. The second part of the presentation is all about attracting and supporting birds in the places we live, work, and play. It covers topics like setting up bird feeders, choosing the best plants for birds, and how making our towns and cities safer for birds. John Brush, Urban Ecologist for the City of McAllen, teaches this presentation. The brush is a professional biologist who has studied, taught about, and guided people to see birds for over 10 years in the Rio Grande Valley.

Some migratory birds, like Pine Siskin, strongly react to local food availability thus the importance of native plants in our region.

This presentation is open to everyone, whether you are a dedicated bird watcher, backyard bird enthusiast, teacher, or just curious about the birds that brighten our days. Given in a friendly, engaged style, there is something to learn and enjoy for people of all backgrounds. Remember, on Saturday morning you can also purchase native plants to get your bird-friendly space started!
