A study conducted by the City of McAllen Traffic Department shows the new Bicentennial Boulevard extension has alleviated traffic congestion on heavily traveled parallel streets in the year since the extension opened. Traffic has shown a steady increase on Bicentennial Blvd and significant decreases on 10th and 23rd Streets.
The extension from Nolana Avenue to Dove Avenue opened September 2012 with an average of 8500 cars a day utilizing the strip. That number has jumped to 17,000 a day, a 65% increase in just over a year. While traffic has increased along this section, 10th and 23rd Streets have seen a 19 and 12 percent decrease within the year, proving the new extension alleviates congestion along those routes.
