Back when there weren’t banks at every corner, there was McAllen State Bank (MSB) and maybe one or two others. The bank logo was “McAllen State Bank – Trust the Leader,” after moving from 1 S. Broadway to the 17-story Tower at 200 S. 10th Street in 1979, the bank was the leader in McAllen and the Valley. Many bankers employed at MSB continued their careers at many other McAllen and Valley banks, and many have retired. Many have unfortunately passed away, such as the iconic Bank Chairman Glen Roney, Bob Goodwin, Mary Ann Hartness, Reynaldo Zamora, Alma de la Garza, and Connie Mora are a few among many, many others.
It is time for the MSB family of bankers to share an evening of remembering the “good old days” at McAllen State Bank, which launched the careers of many successful bankers in this area. This extraordinary evening will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Rio Bank event venue at 701 W. Expressway 83 in McAllen starting at 6:30 p.m. The evening will feature bank memorabilia and any bankers present will be invited to share any special recollections at MSB. Attire is festive casual.
The grand party will include wine, live music, a delicious array of heavy hors d’oeuvres, and desserts in an atmosphere filled with warm camaraderie and shared memories. Primary sponsors include the McAllen Heritage Center and Mr. Ernest R. Williams (Ernie), the president of MSB Bank. However, additional sponsors are welcome.
For more information, MSB (and First City, Texas) bankers may join the McAllen State Bank reunion Facebook page or call Elva M. Cerda at 681-2861 or Irma Murray at 457-1280. Bankers are also asked to call to make arrangements to bring any photos or artifacts for the event.
As noted above, we wish to remember as many of our MSB bankers who have passed away as possible, so please email any information to info@mcallenheritagecenter.com. Tickets per person are $50.00, and reservations for the event will begin on 12/02/2025. You may call Erica Almazan at the museum at 681-2860 to place your reservation and pay for your ticket via credit card. Checks may be mailed to MHC P O Box 1929, McAllen, TX 78505, and made payable to the event host, McAllen Heritage Center Inc.
