AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has made an important administrative move, designating Angela Colmenero as the Interim Attorney General of Texas, pursuant to Article 15, Section 5 of the Texas Constitution. The appointment becomes effective at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 14. This reshuffling follows the exit of John Scott, who previously held the interim Attorney General position, having been appointed by the Governor in May.
“I am deeply appreciative of John Scott’s diligent service as Texas’ Interim Attorney General, and I applaud his commitment and leadership in fulfilling this role,” expressed Governor Abbott. “Exercising the powers vested in me by the Texas Constitution, I am now appointing Angela Colmenero as the Interim Attorney General of Texas. Angela, apart from her valuable service in the Governor’s Office, has also worked under my administration in the Texas Attorney General’s Office, gaining firsthand operational knowledge of the agency. Her expansive experience in state government and litigation expertise make her a fitting candidate to take the helm at the Texas Attorney General’s Office and assume the role of the state’s chief law enforcement officer while the Texas Senate undergoes impeachment proceedings.”
A resident of Austin, Angela Colmenero was previously appointed as Governor Abbott’s Deputy Chief of Staff, following her tenure as the Principal Deputy General Counsel to the Governor since November 2021. She also served as the Deputy General Counsel to the Governor beginning in September 2018. Prior to these roles, Colmenero demonstrated her leadership abilities through her nearly decade-long service at the Texas Attorney General’s Office, holding positions such as Chief of the General Litigation Division and Deputy Chief of the Special Litigation Division. She holds a law degree from the University of Notre Dame and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
