Originally constructed in 1994, the park is a popular place for our beach visitors, attracting thousands of visitors annually, especially during the summer months. Due to safety concerns, the County recently decided to close the existing pavilion located on the south end. This prompted the decision to restore the park and make the necessary improvements that will better serve our beach visitors for many generations to come.

The proposed improvements consist of demolishing two existing covered pavilions that have exceeded their serviceable life and are no longer safe for occupancy. These two pavilions would be replaced with new elevated plaza pavilions equipped with picnic tables and environmentally friendly lighting. The two existing restroom facilities/bath houses, concession buildings and office building will also be upgraded and refurbished. The Park Ranger Station will also be receiving improvements.

The south parking lot will receive an overlay to preserve and prolong the life of the parking lot. A pedestrian beach walkway access with rinse stations on the south end will also be developed to facilitate pedestrians accessing the beach. Aesthetic improvements such as landscaping are also included in the overall design and construction of the project. Weather permitting; the construction should be completed in 8-12 months.

“Our county coastal parks on South Padre Island are a destination for many visitors and offer an array of amenities and recreational opportunities. I’m excited to see improvements to Andy Bowie Park, and I’m also excited about all the improvements to come to the rest of the county’s coastal parks”, said Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr.

“I’m looking forward to the new improvements at Andy Bowie Park. The improvements to this popular beach access area will result in positive changes that children and families will benefit from for years to come,” said Commissioner Sofia C. Benavides.

“I want to express my gratitude to County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. and the Commissioners Court
